This week we had the pleasure of creating with visiting artist, Kate Bingaman-Burt. This artist visit included a 2-day zine workshop and talk at the Columbia Museum of Art. The first thing I noticed when I walked into the first day of the zine workshop was how much stuff Kate had brought for us to work with. Just off the top of my head, there were handouts and fliers, a button maker, vintage rub-on transfer letters, and googly eyes. All of this made me feel right at home (as an artist who loves to hoard scraps and materials) and I knew Kate and I would get along. In the two-day workshop, I was able to create three zines and a whole lot of buttons. Sitting around a massive table with all the art supplies I could ever need and practically the entire GD+I cohort made my heart really happy. Kate was fabulous, her talk about what inspires her to create and her methods of being productive really resonated with me. The feeling of sitting with my talented community while we all create with no pressure was my favorite part of this experience.
